17,717 arrested and 4,586 vehicles seized for violating curfew

While claiming that the Police would further tighten the law on those who violate the curfew regulations, DIG Ajith Rohana said yesterday all those who were in Police custody would be charged in a Magistrate court and as such they face the risk of getting a two year prison term or a fine of Rs. 5,000 or both on conviction.   

The Police have arrested 1,815 people in the 24 hours ended at 6:00 am yesterday (April 8), for violating the curfew. The police also seized 595 vehicles for traveling without a permit during the curfew.   According to the Police Media Unit, 17,717 persons have been arrested since the islandwide curfew initially imposed at 6.00 pm on March 20 until 6.00 am yesterday (April 8).   The police have also taken 4,586 vehicles into custody island wide during this period, the Police Media Unit (PMU) said.
