Popular traditional Sri Lankan restaurant Upali’s by Nawaloka (Upali’s) will be opening up a branch in Melbourne, Australia, according to an advertisement on the restaurant’s official Facebook page, which said ‘coming soon’.

Upali’s is the namesake of Upali Dharmadasa, the Managing Director of the Nawaloka conglomerate and son of the celebrated ‘Nawaloka Mudalali’. Dharmadasa’s passion is cooking, often captured on camera cooking at philanthropic events helping the needy.

The restaurant, a partnership between Dharmadasa and hospitality veteran David Cruse—also an avid philanthropist—who spent over 35 years in Melbourne, where he owned the Knox Tavern--a spot frequented by the Sri Lankan cricket team while on tour—before returning to Sri Lanka.

Upali’s is located in Colombo 7, giving views of the Town Hall, Vihara Maha Devi Park and the Nelum Pokuna Theatre and has well-appointed decor.
Melbourne is home to many Sri Lankan expatriates, as well as Australian-born Sri Lankans, who will be able to experience Upali’s signature authentic Sri Lankan dishes in the near future.
