Sri Lanka Tourism won the converted award ‘Best Eco Tourism Destination’ at the World Tourism Expo in Shanghai China recently.
The award was received by Sri Lanka Counsel General for Sri Lanka Poornima Gunesekera and Sri Lanka Tourism Market Head for Sri Lanka Chinthaka Liyanarachchi.
The World Tourism Expo that takes place annually in Shanghai and co-hosted by Shanghai Municipal Tourism and VNU Exhibition Europe, attracts around 45,000 top travel and tourism professionals from around the world with over 600 exhibits, a sought-after event in the Chinese calendar and a modern hot spot for global tourism.
Sri Lanka Tourism Chairman commented that Sri Lanka must become a top 20 tourist destination within the next five years, given the national focus on the industry and the strong demand generation that will come to place in the near future.
“We have grown by 81.8 percent from the visitors from China as at end-April 2015 but I am very keen to see these numbers reflected on the formal sector occupancy of Sri Lanka,” he said.
