August exports, imports up

Sri Lanka’s exports rose 19.1 percent to US$ 952 million while expenditure on imports increased 66.5 percent to US$ 1, 837 million in the month of August year-on-year, country’s Central Bank said.
 
For the first eight months of 2011, the cumulative earnings from exports and expenditure on imports have increased by 28.6 per cent to US$ 6,966 million and 50.6 per cent to US$ 12,926 million, respectively. As a result, the trade deficit stood at US$ 5,960 million.
