Western Province continues to retain crown as largest contributor to GDP

Sri Lanka’s Western Province continued to be the highest contributor to the country’s gross domestic products (GDP), accounting for 42 percent in 2014, little changed from the previous year.  The Southern Province accounted for the second highest contribution of 10.8 percent in 2014, compared to 10.4 percent in 2013. 

The third highest contribution of 10.7 percent was recorded in North Western Province in 2014 and the contribution from the Central Province was 10.4 percent. 
The contributions of the Sabaragamuwa and Eastern Provinces decreased by 0.1 percent each to 6.7 percent and 5.8 percent, respectively, in 2014. 

Compared to 2013, North Central Provincial GDP contribution increased to 5.1 percent in 2014 from 5.0 percent in 2013. Western Province
Likewise, Uva Province contribution also increased from 4.9 percent in 2013 to 5.0 percent in 2014. 
The Northern Province’s contribution in 2014 was 3.6 percent compared to 3.5 percent in 2013.
Meanwhile, reflecting the overall developments taking place in the country’s economic environment, all provinces recorded healthy nominal growth rates in their provincial GDP (PGDP) in 2014, ranging between 5.9 percent and 11.1 percent.
