Thilak Dharmaratne appointed as Ocean University VC

President Maithripala Sirisena has appointed Thilak Dharmaratne as the Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Ocean University.  

The Ocean University was established under the provision of Ocean University of Sri Lanka Act No. 31 of 2014. It is under the purview of Skills Development and Vocational Training Minister Piyasena Gamage. Dharmaratne is a geology graduate from the University of Peradeniya. He holds a postgraduate degree in management from the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administrative (SLIDA).

He was attached to the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) for five years and subsequently was appointed as the Director General of the Gem and Jewellery Research Institute in the year 2010. Dharmaratne is the only scholar in Sri Lanka with postgraduate degrees in both oceanography and geology.
