The water filling ceremony of stage II of the Hambantota Port is scheduled to be held tomorrow (July 11), under the patronage of Ports and Aviation Minister Arjuna Ranatunga.

Under phase II, a container terminal is planned to be opened shortly.

The Chinese built port has so far been able to attract transshipment vessels despite it being located in the close proximity of a main shipping route.
The bunkering operations carried out by Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) is also reported to have come to a halt.

Hambantota Port was much criticized by the present government when they were in the opposition, identifying it as a vanity project of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
