Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake said yesterday that the government would finalize the arrangements pertaining to the payment of Golden Key depositors by July 24.

The Cabinet approved a proposal to pay 41 percent of the deposits of Golden Key depositors through the Central Bank.

Addressing a news conference held at the ministry, the minister said the previous government was involved in a scam delaying the payments to the depositors.

“Everything related to giving relief was done in secret by the previous regime and they still continue to obstruct us in our attempts to give relief to depositors. We will re-pay the golden key depositors on July 24 and we will reveal the total capital on that day,” he said.

However, during the last Supreme Court hearing on July 07, the Central Bank failed to submit the re-payment plan for Golden Key depositors for a second consecutive date.

The repayment plan was to be submitted based on the Cabinet memorandum to repay 41 percent of the funds deposited in the Golden Key Credit Card Company.

The submitting of the said plan was due to take when the Fundamental Rights petition into the Golden Key Credit Card Company was heard before a five- judge bench.

The Supreme Court’s five-judge-bench fixed further hearing for August 4.
