Efforts underway for early harvest on Indo-Lanka non-tariff barriers

In accordance with the outcome of discussion between Prime Ministers Ranil Wickremesinghe and Narendra Modi, during the former’s visit to India, negotiations are underway to sign a framework for the proposed Indo-Lanka Joint Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement by end December 2015 or early January 2016, a brief statement by Development Strategies and International Trade Ministry said.  “The final Agreement is to be completed by mid - 2016.  Simultaneously, a concerted effort is being made to address non-tariff barriers which have proved to be impediments to the growth of Sri Lankan exports to India. 
 Work is ongoing to reap an early harvest through the elimination of some key non-tariff barriers by the time of signing the Framework Agreement, ” 
the statement noted.
