Eagle Logistics celebrates its 10th Anniversary today with religious activities at their corporate office 281, R. A. De Mel Mawatha, Colombo-03.
Eagle Logistics’ roots date back to the year 2005. It is a result of CEO Asanga Weerackody creating the name of Eagle Logistics and with
CL Synergy helping the back office operations.
CL Synergy is the co-partner for Eagle Logistics Colombo since its inception. CL Synergy is an 11 year old freight company which has 3 more similar joint ventures in the industry.
Asanga Weerackody’s (CEO of Eagle Logistics) freight forwarding carrier ways back to 1991 at Pership Clearing and Forwarding as a marketing executive. He was a salesman thorough in air freight export for many years before taking the challenge for the head of Union Transport (UTI) Colombo operations which was under the same group Pership.
In Oct 2005, after he had completed 14 years in the Sri Lankan Freight Forwarding industry (Pership, John Keells and HTL Logistics), he had decided to create his own version of Logistics with the name of Eagle as it is the strongest bird in the air.
At the same time he decided to look at the areas where freight forwarders are not heavily involved. He saw there is a huge potential in the import industry as the country’s resource base is limited and most raw materials have to be imported.
It was a right start to a new company and Eagle managed to get in to many top businesses during a very short period of time. At the same time the company realised communication is the only competitive advantage in the business. As a result of this, in year 2010, the company started its first branch office at Katunayake which could help to be close to customers and improve communication. Unlike other companies, it was a different branch concept which is fully equipped with sales, customer service and operations. Within a very short period the concept became successful where the management decided to open branches in 6 other locations. While being active in the market Eagle Logistics realised that involving in supply chain management is important for a freight forwarder since logistics is part of same.
In 2011, Eagle Logistics became the first freight company to be a member of Institute of Supply and Materials Management in Sri Lanka. During this decade, company continuously followed a different policy in recruitment unlike other companies. Company has never recruited people from the industry. Young blood flowing in is the main reason for the company to become successful. Top management started the carrier with Eagle 10 years ago and rest of the staff follow same.
Today Eagle Logistics has over 120 staff at 7 locations Katunayake, Biyagama, Moratuwa, Homagama, Peliyagoda, Nugegoda and corporate office at Colombo 03 handling import export business for more than 300 customers.
