Taxes on imported fish, dried fish and Maldive fish increased

The Fisheries Ministry has decided to increase the taxes on imported fish, dried fish and Maldive fish. 


Fisheries Ministry Secretary Indu Ratnayake said the measure was taken to protect the local fisheries industry.
According to the new tax rates, which have been increased with effect from October 27, 2020, the tax levied on a kilogramme of imported fish is Rs.200.


A tax of Rs.127 per kilogramme is levied on imported dried fish and Rs.302 per kilogramme on Maldive fish, she said.


Ratnayake said the country is currently receiving a high fish harvest. Accordingly, the production of dried fish and Maldive fish is also increasing, she added.
