The Telecommunication Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) yesterday said it is initiating preliminary measures to implement number portability in Sri Lanka.

TRCSL Chairman Oshada Senanayake

“The TRC initiates preliminary steps on implementing number portability, which would enable consumers to select service providers without change of the existing mobile numbers,” the official Twitter handline of the TRCSL said.

Mobile number portability is a network function that allows mobile subscribers to switch service providers while retaining the mobile telephone number.

As per the current Sri Lankan telecom regime, the mobile telephone number belongs to the service provider. But the number portability will vest the ownership of the mobile number with the customer.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal have already enabled mobile number portability in the South Asian region.
