ECONOMYNEXT: The Sri Lankan government has decided to add about 1,000 megawatts of power using liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel, a spokesman said.
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal to add LNG to the fuel mix of the island’s power generating system, spokesman Land and Parliamentary Reforms Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka said.
The policy proposal was put forward by a cabinet subcommittee chaired by Special Assignments Minister Sarath Amunugama.
Karunathilaka told a news conference the cabinet has approved a proposal to add about 1,000 MW of LNG power plants by 2019 on a fast-track basis.
It also decided to build infrastructure to import and unload LNG in Sri Lanka also on a fast-track programme, he said.
