The state-owned retail chain Lanka Sathosa, which caters to low-income families, will be introducing modern technology to its previously announced expansion, Industry and Commerce Minister Rishad Bathiudeen said.
“The new management of Lanka Sathosa has developed strategies for expansion. Among the important projects planned are 125 CCTV projects, 195 ERP (enterprise resource planning) projects, setting up of five laboratories and the installation of a human resource information system,” he said.
He was speaking at the opening of the 325th Lanka Sathosa outlet in Muthur. The retail chain is now aiming to reach up to 500 outlets.
According to the Industry and Commerce Ministry, Lanka Sathosa is mostly used by households whose income is below Rs.30,000, which includes 60 percent of Sri Lanka’s population.
Lanka Sathosa employs 3,500 and generates Rs.30 billion in annual turnover.
According to Bathiudeen, the newly opened Muthur outlet has managed to generate Rs.600,000 worth of sales in its first day of operations.
