Sri Lanka is to set up a committee of experts to study the possibility of sharing the infrastructure facilities for the deployment of high-speed broadband services and electricity in a bid to fast-track the digitization of the country.

The study will see the possibility of using the infrastructure of the licensed broadband service providers and licensed electricity distributors for this exercise. A joint proposal in this regard by Telecommunication, Digital Infrastructure and Foreign Employment Minister Harin Fernando and Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers this week.

Last year, Fernando revealed the government’s plans to set up an infrastructure-sharing institution to tackle the challenges faced to speed up broadband deployment.
