The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce yesterday urged the law enforcement authorities to maintain law and order in the country, fearing that the current events unfolding could disturb the peace among the communities.
Issuing an open letter to Defence Ministry Secretary General S.H.S. Kottegoda yesterday, the chamber expressed grave concerns on the possibility of disruption to law and order in the country, based on the worrisome statements made by certain parties.
“As the highest ranking official vested with responsibility for the maintenance of law and order, we expect you will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to maintain peace, law and order and prevent the occurrence of unlawful and disruptive activities that will disturb the peace of the communities,” the chamber requested.
Further, the chamber remains confident that the authorities would investigate the allegations laid against certain individuals, irrespective of their portfolios and be brought to justice.
“We also need to understand whether all allegations against those who are suspected and accused of engaging in terrorist activities have in fact been investigated and that the administration of justice process has been complied with and that we can have confidence that all suspicions are being adequately investigated irrespective of the positions being held by those who are suspected to be involved,” the
chamber stated.
The letter was also copied to Acting IGP, Commander of Sri Lanka Army and Chief of Defence Staff of Sri Lanka Armed Forces.
