The Cabinet of Ministers has given its approval to conduct a feasibility study to construct a domestic airport in the Digana, Maberiyathenna area.

A proposal in this regard to the Cabinet was made by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.

A government spokesperson said the airport will allow operating aircraft connecting Kandy and other areas of the country.

Sri Lanka already has 13 domestic airports and two international airports.

Kandy is a major tourist attraction and for many years the travel and tourism industry has been asking for direct air link between the main international airport in Colombo and Kandy.
