Bank of Ceylon (BOC) General Manager D.M. Gunasekara who was sent on leave to facilitate an investigation the bank was carrying out returned to work on Monday, Mirror Business learns.
Sources at the state-owned banking giant said it was the pressure mounted by the trade unions, executives and corporate management of the bank that ensured the return of Gunasekara.
A statement issued by BOC previously said that Gunasekera was placed on leave to facilitate an independent investigation. However, the statement did not specify what the bank was probing.
It was speculated that placing Gunasekara on leave was related to the bank opening up a branch in Seychells allegedly without proper approvals and irregular staff recruitments during the previous regime.
Meanwhile, some believed the role BOC played in the recent bond controversy was the reason.
A media statement issued by the committee appointed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to probe the bond deal recommended BOC to carry out a forensic audit and call explanations from the bank’s Chief Dealer for risking bank’s funds.
