Young couple hacked in Kahawatte

A husband and wife in their twenties were seriously injured after they were hacked by unidentified men last night in Dimbulwala, Kahawatte, police said.

Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said that the couple was sleeping at the time of the incident with their five-year-old son. The wife had seen a shadow and when she screamed her husband had attempted to catch the suspect.

The suspect had then slashed the 28-year-old Amarasiri and his 27-year-old wife Dilhani with a sword. He then fled.

Residents rushed to the house when they heard the screaming who had sustained serious injuries to their arms and legs.

The couple was rushed to the Ratnapura General Hospital by the residents and according to hospital authorities they were in a critical condition.
Their house is situated two kilometers away from the house where a woman was killed on October 31.

A large number of people gathered at the scene of crime and the police had to cordon off the area around the house.
Previously fifteen murders, all women took place in the last four years in Opatha, Warapitiya, Kotakethana and Dimbulwala.(Supun Dias)
