The Western Provincial Council (WPC) unanimously passed a resolution today condemning the move by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon to appoint a three member panel to advice him on Sri Lanka.

UPFA Western Provincial Council Minister Udaya Gamampila told Daily Mirror online that the resolution was presented by UPFA Provincial Councilor Rehensiri Waragoda and was unanimously passed by all the political parties including the UNP and JVP.

“When the resolution was taken up, all the poltical parties put aside their differences and supported it. Unlike in parliament, even the UNP and JVP supported it,” Gamampila said.

The resolution which was passed at the Western Provincial Council was taken up as an urgent matter, bypassing the scheduled agenda for the day.

The decision by Ban Ki Moon to appoint an expert panel to advise him on accountability issues related to Sri Lanka has come under heavy criticism with the Sri Lankan government saying  the move was unwaranted and uncalled for.

However, despite the strong objections, Ban Ki Moon has clearly stated that the panel will remain and they will present a report on their findings to the UN Chief after four months. (Daily Mirror online)
