The Leader of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and Minister of Justice, Rauff Hakeem today requested SLMC members of the Kalmunai Municipal Council to work closely with all the parties representing the council in line with its late leader A. H. M. Ashraff.

SLMC won the council at the last local government election while several parties including TNA, UNP, UPFA also got their members elected.

Mr. Hakeem said the policy of late Mr. Ashraff was democracy without opposition where all parties representing the people work together for a common goal.

“Let this council be an example to other local bodies,” he said urging the elected members to treat their opponents in Kalmunai the same way they treat their own members.

He also highlighted that the SLMC had managed to win the municipal council in spite of a mixed population in the area.

Mr. Hakeem also recalled his party was able to win the council despite the minor clashes in the area on the Election Day. He said they were caused by the preferential vote system which had become a great concern.

About 11 members of the council took their oaths before Mr. Hakeem while the Mayor-elect Shiraz Shahiv and Deputy Mayor Nizam Kariappar had taken their oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa on an earlier date with the rest of the ruling party local government representatives. (Yohan Perera)
