Housing and Construction Minister Wimal Weerawansa yesterday said if saboteurs within the government were responsible for the fuel hedging gamble in which Sri Lanka might have to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to banks, tough action must be taken against these officials, whoever they may be.

Addressing a meeting at Homagama the minister said these officials if found guilty must be compelled to pay this money. “If they cannot pay their property and other assets must be confiscated. If they don’t have sufficient assets, they must be jailed for this criminal gamble,” he said.

The minister said if the government paid this huge amount from public funds, the country would face serious economic problems.
