The main opposition UNP yesterday questioned as to why the Sri Lankan government had endorsed the second term of UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.

UNP National Organizer and Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayake told a news conference yesterday that the government had followed double standards in this issue. He made this point by recalling that the government had accused the UN Secretary General of violating Sri Lanka’s sovereignty by trying to interfere with the country’s internal matters. He also pointed out that some ministers even staged death fasts against Mr. Moon in the recent past.

“The government had failed to suggest an alternative candidate for the UN Secretary General;’s post though it comprises ministers who suggested an alternate UN organization,” UNP MP said.
