We’ll implement capital punishment if needed: Wijeyadasa

Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said today the Government was prepared to implement capital punishment if it was necessary to prevent the increasing trend in crime in the country and stressed the need to expedite investigations and punish offenders without delay.


“We will try our best to prevent the increasing trend in crime and we will take steps to combat it even by implementing capital punishment,” he said.


Minister Rajapaskshe expressed these views when he met the Asgiriya Chapter Mahanayake the Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera this morning.


He said legal education had been in an utter mess and more than 80 percent of the candidates who sat the law college entrance exam had failed.
The minister said the present government had taken steps to create an atmosphere for the judges to perform their duties without any interference.(J.A.L. Jayasinghe)
