Voter registry to be completed by mid-week

Nominations for the upcoming provincial council polls in Northern, Central and North Western provinces will be called only after the supplementary voter register created to provide voting rights to displaced persons of the North are completed and certified, an Elections Department official said today.

The official speaking to Daily Mirror Online said that a meeting was held at the Elections Department today to discuss the progress of the supplementary register and added they are planning to complete the certification process by mid-week.

“The gazette notification calling nominations for the PC polls will be issued only after the certification procedures are concluded,” the official added.

The President issued a proclamation yesterday to the Elections Commissioner to hold the Northern provincial council polls. Meanwhile, the Central and North Western provincial councils were also dissolved with effect from midnight yesterday.

The PC polls are scheduled to be held during the latter part of September.

Supplementary register was created under a special provision granted by the Registration Of Electors (Special Provisions) Act No. 27 of 2013 to accommodate those who did not possess the voting rights among the displaced, as there was no other option to insert their names to the electoral registry.  (LP)
