The Police today inaugurated a system through which all police data could be connected into one virtual platform.

The Virtual Private Network (VPN) will contain investigation reports, crime reports, a data base for finger prints and pictures, police reports and circulars for an in-house communication system connecting all police stations.

The Police Department said in another move all senior police officials would be connected to the system through mobile phones to enable them to communicate instantly during emergencies.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon said 742 police stations and offices would be connected though the system.  “We have trained 1,744 police officers to maintain the system,” he said.

The Police Chief said the system would also have a video conferencing facility through which he could contact senior police officials at a moment’s notice.

Preparations are also underway to integrate police gazette notices, crime database, a database for police administration and a data system for police hospitals in the future.(By Darshana Sanjeewa)
