The Police Department today advised issued a warning to the general public “to be more vigilant when using internet, especially for e-banking services and online transactions” citing rising number of cyber crimes.

The Police also advised to use a separate SIM card or a special line for web based transactions.

“Use the real website of banks when e-banking and avoid various other links which come via emails claiming to be the website of their bank,” Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

“There are emails asking information such as account details and passwords of credit and debit cards. Don’t reply to these emails. Use the official website of their bank,” SSP Rohana told a news conference today.

“People shouldn’t attach their land phone or their personal mobile phone numbers as contact details on online business websites.  Criminals may use these details later to nefarious activities like asking ransom. People can avoid this threat by using a separate SIM card for online business so they can stop using it if there was any issue,” he said.

He said the special unit established at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to look into cyber crimes had received 235 complaints related to social media.

He said the unit also received nine complaints on e-banking and 34 complaints regarding email hackings. (Lahiru Potmulla)
