While stating that the Northern Provincial Council election was still uncertain the UNP said today if the election were held it would prove that the government had accepted the UNP’s opinion on devolution of power in the country.

“The UNP always believed that devolution of power was the best way to resolve the ethnic struggle in the country. Had the members in present government agreed with us on devolution in 2001, the war should also have ended before 2009,” UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella told a news conference today.

He also said if the government held the election for the north the government would split because it consists of parties that have different opinions on the Provincial Council system.

Speaking on the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) scheduled to be held in November MP Mangala Samaraweera said the government should resolve issues arising from the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) recommendations, United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) resolutions and the Commonwealth Values before holding the summit.(Lahiru Pothmulla)
