Video: Government neglecting distribution of poll cards: JVP

Stating that the distribution of poll cards had been hampered by the ongoing flood situation in the country, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today urged the authorities to focus more on this situation.

JVP Propaganda Secretary MP Vijitha Herath told a media briefing that the government should focus their attention more on those affected by the floods. “The Government seems to be using the flood situation for its political advantage, targeting the presidential election. This situation should be changed,” he said stressing that a genuine effort should be made to help the flood victims.

Mr. Herath said that plans were already underway to sling mud at the opposition, including the JVP, using posters and TV programmes, and warned that these efforts would be multiplied as the election draws near.

“A poster is being printed to sling mud at the JVP leader at a press in Ratmalana,” he said.

Responding to a question raised by journalists as to what steps the party would take in the event the Commissioner of Elections suffers tension as what occurred during the 2010 presidential election, the MP said that such a situation was unlikely to repeat itself this time round. “We will decide what is to be done depending on the actual situation on the day,” he said.

Mr. Herath, responding to another question raised by journalists on whether his party had held discussions with the common candidate Maithripala Sirisena, said that his party had not had any such formal discussions with him. But several open discussions had taken place on defeating the present regime, he said. (Yohan Perera and Sanath Desmond)
