Vavuniya businessman pays Rs.1 Mn as ransom

A Vavuniya businessman had complained that he paid Rs.1 million as ransom to some abductors to have his five-year-old son released, Vavuniya Police said.

In his complaint the businessman said his son had been abducted on his way home from pre-school and that originally the abductors had demanded Rs.3 million if he was to be released.

Police said according to the businessman he had told the abductors that he did not have Rs.3 million and they had settled for Rs.1 million which was paid to them.

They said the abductors could have been arrested if the police were informed before the payment of the ransom.

Meanwhile, the police are on the lookout for the abductors.
