Vaas case: Suspect refused bail

Colombo Additional Magistrate A.M. Shahabdeen refused to release on bail the fourth suspect Priyantha Sanjeewa who is alleged to have connived with former DIG Vaas Gunawardena to transport weapons and explosives to a hideout at Kalagedihena from his residence.

The Magistrate overruled the request made by Counsel Jaliya Samarasinghe to release his client on bail and upheld the prosecution objection which emphasized that if the suspect was released on bail he would interfere in the ongoing CID investigations.

CID ASP Abeysekera said even though the counsel for the fourth suspect had contended that at the time of the incident his client was in Kandy it could be proved by checking the call details on his client’s mobile phone.

He said the SIM could be possibly used by others while the suspect was in another place. He said the witnesses spoke of the suspect’s involvement in the case.

ASP Abeysekera said the CID recorded the statement of a person known as Wasantha who had revealed the names of several other people who are to be taken in for questioning.(Farook Thajudeen)
