UPFA sweeps polls but lose Colombo

The ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance secured power of the majority of Local Councils at the elections held yesterday. However the UNP bastion of Colombo was secure with the UNP winning the CMC by a margin of over 24,000 votes. Despite that victory the UNP were in shambles losing the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal council which is also considered a UNP stronghold by 8000 votes. The UPFA also secured the Kandy Municipal Council for the first time in 52 years by a thin margin of 3000 votes.

The UPFA won all other major Councils which included the Galle, Matara, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Badulla, Matale, Nuwara Eliya  Ratnapura, Gampaha, Negombo and Hambantota Councils, with differing margins.

The SLMC won the Kalmunai Municipal Council.

The UPFA have secured 245 seats, the UNP won 131 seats, the JVP 5 seats the SLMC 11 seats and other parties won 28 seats. (HF)
