UNP Member of Parliament Lakshman Seneviratne has raised suspicion over the suicide of a UNP supporter near the UNP Headquarters in Sirikotha yesterday saying it may have been instigated by some elements who want Ranil Wickramasingha to remain as the party leader.

Seneviratne who has urged the police to conduct a full scale probe into the incident says that certain elements who were in support of Wickramasingha may have instigated the victim to set himself ablaze.

“I assume this is what has happened. Certain elements who want Wickramasingha to remain as the party leader may have instigated the whole incident. The police must investigate this matter,” Seneviratne said.

A man identified as Rienzi Algama, set himself ablaze opposite the UNP headquarters Sirikotha yesterday and was admitted to the Kalubowila hospital with serious burn injuries. He was later transferred to the Colombo National Hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya had said yesterday that the victim was a UNP supporter and had been ‘disgusted’ over the ‘disunity’ of the UNP and had stressed the need of unity within the party. (Daily Mirror online)
