UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said today that the Elections Commissioner has agreed to provide more vote counting officers for the upcoming provincial council elections to ensure transparency and credibility of the vote counting process and also to allow the political parties to open an office at every counting centre to carry out their election-related activities.

According to Mr. Attanayake the Elections Commissioner has admitted that some former provincial council ministers have not handed back their official vehicles, residences and other state assets, and assured that he would take steps to charge such politicians with misusing state property.

Mr. Attanayake expressed these views following a discussion held at the Election Secretariat where political party representatives and police officers met with the Elections Commissioner.

“The Elections Commissioner promised us that he would direct the police to remove illegal posters and cutouts from February 17, “Mr. Attanayake added.

Meanwhile, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the Elections Commissioner was attempting to make the PC elections free and fair, but he was not receiving enough support from the ruling party. Some prominent ruling party candidates have still not handed back the state vehicles as per the law.(Ajith Siriwardana & Yohan Perera)
