While claiming that the UNP is the country’s main opposition party its National Organiser Daya Gamage stressed that the UNP would not go behind any other party to form an alliance. “ We are the country's main opposition party therefore in creating a common alliance we should be the main stakeholder.

We would not  seek to create a common opposition by going behind newly formed parties as that of Sarath Fonsekas”

Speaking to the Daily Mirror online the National organiser of the UNP said that he had instructed UNP MP Palitha Range Bandara not to participate or organize Political meetings of the former Army Commander. “I received information that MP Range Bandara was involved in organizing meetings for Sarath Fonseka, therefore I instructed him to not do so. This is because the party of Range Bandara is the UNP and its leader is Ranil Wickramasinghe so therefore he has to adhere to the party's line. I told him that we have no objection  with him having his personal rapport with the former Army Commander but not to mix it up with the Politics of the UNP" he said

When questioned about the participation of UNP MP Palitha Thawarapperuma’s participation at the maiden press conference of  former Army Commander Sarath Fonskea, Gamage said that he will immediately look into the matter.

Commenting on the call for a common alliance Daya Gamage said that the UNP would not align itself with any other party in the near future and would rather support all parties that oppose the regime.

Speaking at the press conference however, former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka said that many opposition parliamentarians are currently having discussion with his party in the bid to form a common alliance that is opposed to the current regime. (ISA)
