The UNP, in a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, claimed that there are attempts by some groups to harass state employees who had supported General Sarath Fonseka at the recent Presidential elections.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka, in the letter addressed to the President, alleged that union activists and employees of the Transport Board, Ports Authority and several other government intuitions were told not to report to work tomorrow.

Stating that the employees of these institutions were harassed and even receiving death threats, he said that it was their constitutional right to hold political views and the right to vote to whomever they prefer.

He said harassing them was a threat to the democracy of the country that all citizens have enjoyed till now.

Hence he requested the President to personally look into the matter and take steps and provide security for these employees so they can report to work in a free and safe environment.
