UNP CPC members meet to resolve crisis

All UNP members of the Central Provincial Council have been summoned to Colombo next week for a discussion to resolve the crisis with regard to the opposition leader’s post, Party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said today.

Mr. Attanayake told the Daily Mirror that the party had officially appointed former MP Ranjith Aluvihare to the post after which Lucky Jayawardene claimed it saying he had the backing of majority members.

The UNP General Secretary said he was confident the crisis would be resolved next week.

However Mr. Aluvihare said there was no need for a discussion as he had already been appointed to the post. He said he was already using official room and other facilities at the provincial council.

“I am not going to resign and offer the post to anyone as I have been already appointed by the party,” he said.

But Mr. Jayawardene is insisting that he is more eligible to the post as he had the backing of the majority among the opposition members in the council. Already 12 members have pledged their support to him.
