The opposition United National Party (UNP) has lodged a complaint with the Elections Commissioner over the SMS messages being sent around from a mysterious number (94112512102) against opposition Presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka.

“We have reported this text message to the Elections Commissioner and this is simply a distortion of the truth. Similar to the text message sent on the 1st of the year it is a blatant misuse of public funds,” UNP MP Ravi Karunanayaka told Daily Mirror Online.

The origins of the mysterious text message, with alleged election related reports circulating among the population is yet unknown. A text was received by a number of mobile users during the afternoon of the 20th claiming that an internal poll by the UNP had revealed that the “President enjoys an 8% lead over Fonseka all over the island.”

Another message a day earlier also from the same number warned of an attempt by the opposition to bomb the Kurunegala rally of General Fonseka and obtain sympathy votes. (Daily Mirror online)
