The main opposition United National Party (UNP) today welcomed the government’s decision to call for an explanation about the circumstances surrounding the death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi.

UNP spokesman and parliamentarian Gayantha Karunatilleke told a news conference that it was correct for the government to call for an explanation on the killing. He reminded the government that it should come up with a proper explanation on several incidents including the killing of presidential adviser Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra which shook and shocked the entire country.

Mr. Karunatilleke who mentioned several unfortunate incidents in the recent past said effective action had not been taken against those who were responsible.

Referring to the substandard petrol fiasco, he said the government had managed to slip away by sending one Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) employee on paid compulsory leave.

He said the government should be wary of what was happening in the country today where the people have begun to take the law into their hands and on allegations of suspects in police custody being killed.

“Independent inquiries should be carried out on these incidents as well,” Mr. Karunatilleke said. (Yohan Perera)
