Several Members of the TMVP, including a Deputy Chairman of a Provincial Council are willing to support the candidacy of opposition Presidential candidate General Sarath Fonseka but are hesitant owing to threats from the government, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayaka told Daily Mirror online.
“The government is threatening these members, therefore they can’t come out and openly support the General. We fear for their safety therefore we plan to reveal their names only a week before the elections. However provided that security matters are resolved they will announce their support sometime next week,” told Daily Mirror online.
Reports also surfaced yesterday that the Tamil National Alliance had held discussions with the United National Front and would support the party. “Our discussions with the TNA have been successful. I can’t speak on their behalf but I know that they plan on holding a press conference tomorrow to express their support,” the General Secretary said. (DM Online)
