UNP calls for independent judicial inquiry

The UNP today called for an independent judicial inquiry into the military attack on Weliweriya villagers and added that the UNP had no confidence in military investigations.

UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella told a media briefing that state sector institutions were no longer independent since the repeal of the 17th Amendment.

He said it would be best if the independent judicial investigation was presided over by the judges of the Supreme Court.

Mr. Kiriella said an Army investigation would not be independent or impartial because the army came under the purview of the executive presidency.

He said the investigations carried out by the government were of no use and largely a waste of time.(LSP & LP)
