An unidentified sea creature has been found in the vicinity of Mottuaarama Island in Kalpitiya and its body has been sent to National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) today for DNA tests.

“The creature was found ashore about a week ago and even then the body was severely decomposed. Therefore it was a tough to identify the creature although we have assumed it be a marine mammal,” NARA Kalpitiya Regional Research Center Division Head J.S. Jayantha told Daily Mirror Online.

Mr. Jayantha said that the villagers in the areas who had found the body believe it to be of a ‘mermaid’ as it bears a resemblance to a human. However, the body had been exhumed and sent to NARA headquarters today to carry out tests in order to determine its specie. (Lakna Paranamanna)
