The United National Front which met last night has decided to continue with the Elephant symbol at the General Elections and finalized the seats for its candidates except for the Batticaloa and Nuwaraeliya districts.

Former parliamentarian Mano Ganeshan, speaking to Daily Mirror online, said that the discussions with the UNF alliance members continued for several hours late last night after which the party decided on the seats for its candidates.

The nomination papers for the UNF will be signed over the next few days, Ganeshan said adding however that they were unable to reach an agreement on the Batticaloa and Nuwaraeliya districts.

The decision to go ahead under the Elephant symbol comes amidst last minute attempts by the JVP which urged the UNF to reconsider moves to contest alone and join hands with the political parties which had backed General Sarath Fonseka at the Presidential polls.

General Fonseka, it was reported today, has indicated that he will contest the General Elections under the JVP-led Democratic National Alliance (DNA) and the trophy symbol and not the UNF alliance. (Daily Mirror online)
