Underworld leader ‘Sagara’ arrested

A suspect believed to be the leader of the underworld gang named ‘Sagara’ of Gampaha has been arrested while hiding in a house and is being questioned, the police said.

Police said that Gampaha High Court had issued a warrant to arrest him on sight. He is suspected to have got involved in four murders in Gampaha, Seeduwa, Katunayake and Minuwangoda and some burglaries too.

Police said that while questioning him, it has revealed that he was involved in getting three suspects released by shooting at a prison vehicle. He had been arrested on a tip off the police received.

Under the directions of Matale SSP Thilak Abeysiriwardana, under the supervision of SP Ajantha Samarakoan and under the guidance C1 Keerthi Ranaweera OIC of the Crime Branch Lalith Pieris and the team arrested the suspect and are conducting further inquiries. (M. W. Somaratna)
