The National Child Protection Authority has decided to cancel 300 underage marriages mostly found from the districts of Badulla and Polonnaruwa. The marriages of these couples had been registered before they reached the required age limit of 18.

Authority’s Chairman Anoma Dissanayake, however, said that 240 of these couples had now reached the age limit, and therefore their marriages could be reregistered. She said that all the other marriages would be cancelled.

Also, she said that action would be taken against the Registrars of Marriages responsible in this respect. (ISA)
