The United Nations yesterday expressed concern over the raid on the offices of the Lanka Mirror and Lanka X news websites and on the arrest of nine employees.

UN Secretary General’s spokesman Martin Nesirky told a news conference that the UN was aware that such a raid had taken place.

“And as we’ve said in many other cases, not just with regard to this country, journalists need to be able to do their work without interference.  And that’s the general principle and it applies in this case, too,” he said.

The European Union and the US denounced the attack on the media and said journalists must be able to carry out their legitimate work without fear of harassment or intimidation
