Two underworld members were killed in a police shoot out in the Badagamuwa forest reserve in Kurunegala early this morning when they had opened fire at the police team in an attempt to escape.

Police Spokesperson S.P. Prashantha Jayakody told Daily Mirror online that these two underworld figures were closely linked to Suraj Dhanushka, a famous underworld leader who was killed in a police shoot out in Colombo seven months ago.

The underworld figures have been identified as Sampath Sendella Dias and Charith Chamara Chaturanga of Bloemendhal in Colombo.

According to the police, the two had been arrested by the Pannala Police yesterday but they had later escaped with a police weapon.

They had been hiding in an abandoned house in the Badagamuwa Forest when a police team from the Wellawa Police carried out a raid to arrest them.

The police added that they were compelled to open fire when the suspects had fired at the police team.
