Two top US officials to visit S.Asia

Under Secretary of State Maria Otero and Assistant Secretary of State Robert O. Blake are visiting South Asia to meet government leaders, rights activists and civil society representatives.

Otero, who looks after Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights, and Blake, who is in charge of South and Central Asian Affairs, will first fly to Sri Lanka, a US embassy statement said Tuesday.

It will be Otero’s inaugural trip to the region since she assumed her new duties.

Otero and Blake will meet Sri Lankan government officials, civil society representatives, youth groups and political leaders.

Otero will proceed to New Delhi from February 14-15 to meet officials and civil society leaders.

She will engage in a range of issues including trafficking persons, refugees, and regional security.

Otero will later go to Nepal to meet government and civil society leaders to discuss bilateral and regional issues, including the peace process.

Blake will depart Colombo for Bangladesh, where he will stay from February 14-16 and participate in a series of education and university events.

Blake will also meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. (Source: IANS)
