Two arrested for asking Rs.1mn as extortion

Two suspects were arrested by the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) for threatening and demanding Rs.1 million over the phone from a businessman in Borella.
 
They had threatened to kill him if Rs.1 million was not paid to them. The two suspects had threatened him a number of times over the phone, police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said.
 
The suspects who are believed to be members of an underworld gang were arrested by the police as they were on the run after several police teams were deployed to arrest the two men.
 
After a few days the victim lodged a complaint with the CCD over the threats he is receiving daily. With the assistance and the advice of the CCD the stage was set to arrest the suspects immediately by a special police team.
 
Much information had been gathered from the arrested suspects who were questioned under detention orders. The police are conducting further inquiries into the incident to arrest their associates as well.
 
The suspects were produced before the Hulfsdrop Magistrate and were remanded till January 2, 2012, SP Rohana said. (Supun Dias)
