The Colombo Traffic Court today fined and jailed a trishaw driver who was guilty of obtaining a new driving license from the Department of Motor Traffic after his driving license was impounded by Court. On November 24, 2011 the accused was produced before the Traffic Court by Welikada Police on charges of having caused an accident after the consumption of liquor. He was then fined Rs.6,000 and his driver’s licence was suspended for six months.

However during a routine police check he was found to be in possession of another driver’s license. Police investigations had revealed that the accused had obtained the second license by tendering the temporary one issued to the suspect, to the Commissioner of Motor vehicles and suppressing facts.

At the inquiry before Colombo Traffic Court Magistrate Jeyaram Trotsky, the counsel for the accused pleaded guilty and plead to mitigate the penalty as the accused was a trishaw driver.

The Magistrate imposed a fine of Rs.22,500 and sentenced the accused for three months imprisonment. His original driver’s license and the temporary licenses were suspended by the court. (TFT)
